What is Boogie Woogie?

Boogie Woogie is a lively partner dance that grew out of swing music in the mid‑20th century. It’s known for its fast‑tempo footwork, syncopated rhythms, and playful improvisation.

Social setting

• Usually danced in social venues, dance nights, and festivals.
• Open‑floor format welcomes dancers of any level.
• Friendly atmosphere; partners often rotate, making it easy to meet new people.

What to expect at a Boogie Woogie event

Music is typically upbeat rock‑’n‑roll, early rock, or swing‑style tracks at 140–180 bpm. The floor invites energetic turns, kicks, and smooth glides. Beginners can start with basic steps, while experienced dancers add flamboyant spins and styling.

Getting started

Comfortable dance shoes with a smooth sole are sufficient. Many gatherings include a short beginner lesson before the open dance.
